Teacher rally in Riga

On April 2 there was a teacher march from the teacher union to the ministry building in Riga.  I was among the teachers on one of the six busses that  traveled four hours from Rezekne to Riga.   Teachers were protesting a second cut to their salaries.  At the beginning of 2009 their salaries were cut by 15%-20% and now they are looking at another cut of the same amount.  A teacher I talked to on the bus told me she received a salary of 350 Lats (approximately $700)/month - minus the cut and taxes 180 Lats were left.  Her heating bill during one month this winter was 150 Lats.  It was announced on TV that 4,000 teachers were expected to travel to Riga from all over Latvia but about 10.000 came. (see pictures)  A low birth rate in Latvia has created the situation that numbers in some of the schools in the outlying areas are very low.  The number of teachers is being cut Some schools are being closed.  Had the government been more responsible in dealing with educational issues throughout the 1990's the country would not be in the educational mess it is in now.  The problems in education are magnified due to the economice crisis,

Pre-school and Riga

Last Thursday, March 26 I went to the pre-school again for another session of English;however, this time three of my first year students from the methods course met me there.  I reviewed the words from the previous two sessions and then we divided the class into 3 groups and each student took a group of 5-6 children.  They taught them animals and their sounds.  We are working toward teaching them Old McDonald had a Farm.  All three sessions went well even though they presented in very different ways.  After the session the children presented me with a names day present they had made - a candle holder and card.  It was very sweet.  That afternoon I took the bus to Riga - not my favorite mode of transportation but the time was right and the bus depot is a 5-minute walk from my apartment.  I took almost 5 hours because it made a stop every 20 minutes.  I got to Riga shortly before 7:00, settled into my room at my favorite hotel, the Metropole, caught up on some email in the hotel's businessh center,  had some soup and a glass of wine in the hotel restaurant and went to bed. On Friday morning I went to the US Embasssy's public affairs division to have a talk with the folks about getting some US Embassy activity in Rezekne.  I had the feeling that Riga was the center of their universe.  They were very receptive to my request and suggestions. There will probably be a representative from the Embassy coming to Rezekne in April. Then I met Mike and went to lunch at the Iguana - good chicken ceasar salad.  While at Mike's I met Ieva, she was the guide that did the walking tour of Old Town with me several years ago. On her website their was mention made of her help being available for family history projects.  I asked her about finding the details of Mother's mother's deportation.  She said that I could look the name up in the book at the Occupation Museum and with the help of that registration number then request her file.  I hadn't been to the Museum for the last couple Latvia visits so it was time for another visit.  Before going through the museum I did get the book and find the Marta Rutkis entry.  Someone from the staff made a copy for me.  As soon as I get the information about how the request for the file is to be written I will do that.  Ieva thought I would probably be able to get the file before I leave in June.  Friday night I met two of the other Fulbrighters, Jeff who is a grad student and International Student Director from Georgia and Joy who is an ESL teacher from Virginia.  We met at a Korean restaurant in Old Town, Miesnieku iela 12.  Saturday I walked around town a little, went to Stockmanns to remind myself of what a department store is, and then met cousin Janis' daughters, Anita and Iveta in the hotel lobby for a glass of champagne.  That is always our drink of choice.  Saturday was my first truly dreary day in Latvian = dark and rainy all day.  When there is snow on the ground it brightens everything but in Riga the snow is gone. On the train back to Rezekne there was more snow on the ground as we headed south and therefore it was also brighter.  I took the express train which takes only 3 hours.  I was also in the first car which cost one Lat (5.80 Ls) more but there is a movie.  This time 10,000 BC - shown in Russian with Latvian subtitles.  Didn't particularly like the movie but the train ride was great.  The train station is about a 30 minute walk from my apartment - just the right amount of walking after sitting for three hours.

25. March 1949 - 2009

(I. Jasmana foto)

March 25
Commemoration Day of Victims of Communist Terror.

On this day in 1949, a total of 43 000 people were deported from Latvia to Siberia - mainly prosperous peasants, regarded by the Soviet occupation regime as alien to communist ideology and the principles of collectivism. (from Latvijas Instituts)

To commemorate the day there was a service at noon at the catholic cathedral In Rezekne. After the service there was a procession ( see link to pictures) to the center of town.  Many of the participants were survivors of the 1949 deportation.  Unfortunately, I had to go to class so I wasn't able to hear the official talks or see the laying of the wreaths and flowers.  At 6:00 pm all the church bells in Riga rang.  Last Sunday the Lutheran minister announced that there would be a short memorial service at 6:00 so I attended.  There was one other person there.  The minister held the vester memorial service for the two of us.  We sang the Latvian national anthem, which is a prayer, at the beginning and end of the service.  There were not any other related activities in the evening but there were many special TV programs being broadcast all evening.  The minister thought maybe people stayed home to watch them.

Cik no viņiem atgriezās Latvijā?

Rezekne- north to south, Žetonu vakars, Snow, Martins Ritins

While walking home from the pre-school session and the immigration office in the north end of Rezekne on Thursday, I took some pictures. (see link)  North Rezekne was the industrial part of town - factories (which have now shut down) soviet-style highrise apartment complexes, train station .  The southern part of town, where I live, is older and more residential. I feel very fortunate to be living where I do.  There is basically one main north-south street in Rezekne - Atbrivosanas aleja and I live at the southern end of that.  It is about a 30 minute walk to the train station in the north.  In the center of Rezekne there is a square on which are the local and regional government buildings, an orthodox church, a catholic church, and the Hotel Latgale - the tallest building in town.  The statue in the center is known as Latgales Mara and symbolizes the unification of the Latvian regions.

Last night, Friday, I went to the Rezkenes ģimnāzijas Žetonu vakars.  It is a festive evening for this year’s graduating class at the academic high school.  Inta’s daughter, Inese,  is a member of that class.  During this evening the students are presented with “Žetons” (badge) which is a symbol and memento of their final year at school.  (There has been some discussion in the media throughout Latvia about this event -  is it really necessary, considering the expense that parents must incur during this economic crisis) After th presentation or the zetons individually to each student by the class (audzinataju) teacher/advisor, there were musical presentations and congratulatory speeches.  After a 5-minute intermission there were theatrical and musical presentations by the classes.  Three classes joined together to do their version of a Blauman’s play.  Inese’s class had written  its own production.  It started with the teacher teaching a geography lesson about the Himalayan Mountains.  The class was bored and a student fell asleep and dreamed of visiting the foreign places that they had learned about over the years – Russia, France, Germany, USA, Brazil.  The dream sequences were sketches dealing with these countries.  Well done. (see pics)  Inese’s sister  has better pictures which I will add later.  Interesting evening.  Graduation ceremony for this class will be June 18.  I’ll probably be here to experience that as well.

Today, Saturday, March 21 I woke up to snow and wind.  I thought spring was supposed to be here!?! The court yard parking lot has many pot holes and ice holes and this morning a car got stuck in one.  I wish I had had my camera handy.   They use wooden spade-like shovels to clear the snow.  It has now stopped snowing and I am hoping that sometime today a little sun will shine through the heavy layer of clouds.

Riga, Alda's birthday, Pre-school

I'll try to catch up on some the activities of the last two weeks.  On March 4 there was a bus trip from Rezeknes Rajona Padome (district council) to Dailas Theater in Riga.  I was able to go along and then spend a few days in Riga and with relatives in Ikskile.  We traveled in a small bus, 25 passengers, about 4 hours to Riga.  There was a dinner stop in Lielvarda - nice place, apparently a rest stop known by people who travel this stretch regularly.  The show was "Lodes par Brodveju" Bullets Over Broadway.  The acting was great but this kind of mafia shoot'em up show would not have been my first choice.  The bus went back to Rezekne after the show but first dropped me off near the hotel.  After I checked in I met Inta and Velta at the Gutenberg Hotel for a glass of wine.  They came to Riga for a meeting with their European consortium partners.  The next day I strolled around Riga and took some picture.  I have so many pictures from past trips but took more any way.  I went to the Swedbank main building on the other side of the Daugave River.  Evija, a cousin - second, removed or... I don't know what the relationship should be called., works in the building.  There is a cafe on the 25th floor with a wonderful view.  After our visit I continued my stroll around Riga. (see link to pictures) I visited with Mike who introduced me to some new possibilities for the internet.  He took my picture which I was then able to load on to Facebook and draugiem. (I'm still not comfortable with these social networks)  I also met with Jeff one of the other Fulbrighters who is an international student coordinator from Georgia.  Our discussion might lead to a cooperative grant project with Inta and Rezeknes Augstskola.  From Jeff I also got the good news that the doctor that was recommended to us at the orientation meeting in DC was really good. During my time in the big city I also bought a MP3 player at the place Mike recommend and surprise, surprise ... I can not say that I received service with a smile but it was almost pleasant.  I wonder if they are learning or if it was just the luck of the draw?  Before I left to get the train to Ikskile I met Liesma, a former Fulbrighter in Chicago, for a cup of tea in the tea house in the park.  Sandra picked me up in Ikskile and explained that since her mother had broken her arm there were no piragi waiting for me this time.  Dzintra's brother's wife was celebrating her 50th birthday that night so there was a party to go to.(see link to pictures)  The last time I was in Ikskile I was there for the wedding of their son.  Sunday I took the train from Ikskile to Ogre.  The Rezekne train stops there and I was back in Rezekne in less than 3 hours.  The train station is in the north end of town and I live in the south but it is only about a 20 minute walk. While in Riga I had a call from the Lutheran minister who invited me to go along to one of his other congregations in Ludza.  Unfortunately I couldn't go because I was getting home later in the day.  I made plans with him to go to another one of his small congreations in Vilani on Sunday.
Today and also last Thursday I went to a preschool to teach some English.  Great fun!  My original idea was to find a place to teach so that I would have a place to go to with students to practice using the methods and strategies we talk about in class.  I'm not sure if that will work out but I'm enjoying those sessions myself. (see pictures)
After today's preschool sesssion I had an appointment at the immigration office.  My residency permit had been approved and had arrived from Riga.  I needed to have a picture taken and sign some papers.  Now I have to register my address at the city council office and then I will be legal until June 29.
I added another sessions to my teaching schedule.  The second year students who have been out in the schools doing their practicum are back in classes.  I like these students - interested, enthusiastic... all the things that they need to be good teachers.  I meet them two times a week and it is a pleasure.  Now that I have gotten to know them a little I have to make up a plan for the course.  That is one thing on my to-do list for the weekend.  I've also been trying to help Inta a little with her dissertation by doing some editing but I run into the problem of British English,  American English and then there is also Latvian English. :))

Tour of Rezekne

Catching up on the events of the conference week...  Uta, Annelore and I had an tour of Rezekne with Vladis who is an artist and instructor.  First we climbed the icy steps to the top of the hill to view the castle ruins and see the town from that point.  Next we went to the museum to get an overview of the history of Rezekne and Latgale.  After that we went to the art gallery.  This wooden building was originally a private home and later used as the recruiting office for the Russian Army.  In the 1990's the art school students started renovating the building.  They did all the work - beautiful inlaid floors, chandeliers, decorative ceiling,...

I'm going to send another couple of links to pictures of my apartment.  Some of you have probably already seen these through other postings.  I am trying to figure out how best to post these things.  I think maybe I have found the spot.
